Christmas Tree

We got our first Christmas tree today! Even though this is our third Christmas together, this is the first time we've decorated. This year we will actually be spending enough of December in our own home to justify the trouble. We got a great deal on the tree at Home Depot - only $20 for a 7 ft Douglas fir. The smell is amazing. Real trees seem so much more festive than fake. Dave was great at getting it to stand up straight in the stand; I seem to have the VanGilder curse of crooked trees.

Decorating the tree was definitely interesting. Out came our Christmas decorations that we had been accumulating and storing for 2.5 years. Turns out we had 1 strand of colored lights, one of white lights, 8 mini glass balls (thanks, mom!) with no hangers, a box of assorted glass ornaments (some without hangers) and a few ceramic snowmen of unknown origin. It took us a while, but we think we made it all work :)

Hah! That's hilarious. I remember Andy and my first Christmas together; I viewed our Christmas tree as a sort of challenge. How good could I make it look with no budget? You know, to this day, my most treasured ornament is a little eggshell that I hollowed out and painted. Can you believe that eggshell ornament has lasted 7 years? (Of course, now that we have kids, it's days are numbered . . . .)

Miss you guys at Christmas! My first tree with Jim was in our tiny River Forest apartment. We had bought a real tree at a tree lot. A couple days later we heard this weird shimmery sound. Turns out the tree was shedding pine needles everywhere. I finally had to get a moving box and place it under the tree to collect the needles. I thought I'd be smart and vacuum the needles, but then they heated up in the vacuum and smelt like burnt pine for weeks afterward. It also fell over twice and after Christmas we were very happy to be rid of the thing. We now have a very fake looking artificial tree up on a sawed off antique mahjong table so that our dog Toby won't knock it over or use our ornaments as chew toys.

Ali,
Dad put the picture of the you and Dave standing next the tree on the backround. He had to stretch it to fit, looks pretty funny. You guys look like little hobbits!
